And in today’s Are-You-Fucking-Kidding-Me Trump family news, it’s been revealed that Melania is suing the Daily Mail for – we kid you not – damaging her ability to sign lucrative endorsement deals as First Lady. Then again, how is this a surprise to anyone, really? Melania is suing the Daily Mail for publishing allegations from a Slovenian magazine that she once worked as an escort – which, the lawsuit claims, is now impacting her ability to leverage her First Lady status. Via ThinkProgress:
In a lawsuit filed today, First Lady Melania Trump revealed her intention to leverage the presidency to ink new “licensing, branding, and endorsement” deals worth many millions of dollars. In the filing, Melania Trump’s lawyer described the position of First Lady as a “once-in-a-lifetime” money making opportunity. She told the court she intended to pursue deals in “apparel, accessories, shoes, jewelry, cosmetics, hair care, skin care, and fragrance.”
Richard Painter, a White House ethics counsel under President George W. Bush and a critic of President Trump’s decision to retain ownership of his real estate empire while in office, told the Washington Post that there’s absolutely no precedent for this.
“There has never been a first lady of the United States who insinuated that she intended to make a lot of money because of the ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ opportunity of being first lady.”
Anyone shocked? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
