“Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who said recently he opposes paying government reparations to the descendants of American slaves, has a family history deeply entwined in the issue: Two of his great-great-grandfathers were slave owners, U.S. census records show.”

Mitch McConnell, who opposes reparations, is descended from two slave owners

McConnell has opposed paying reparations to descendants of slaves, though census records show his family, like many others, benefited from their labor.

  1. The real import of this finding is that slave owners benefited from their slaves’ free labor and that revenue and wealth has been passed down to the slave owners’ children, grand children and great grand children. The slaves never benefited from the relationship, and in fact (rather obviously) are still feeling the economic, social and familial hurt.

It is ironic that McConnell is opposed to reparations when his own fortune may have unacknowledged contributions from slave labor.
